Eating Allergen-Free

Oh gods of carby goodness, I love bread. And pasta. And naan. And pita...and, and...

I can't eat it anymore. Yep, I've got a gluten intolerance (crafty little protein bugger, that gluten).

Rice? Ok. Potatoes? Sure! I can even have quinoa and other obscure grains.

As if that weren't bad enough, dairy might be next to go.

So help a girl out! Give me your best recipes and foods that don't have gluten or dairy. Please!

On that note, an allergen-free bakery just opened up in my area (kind of) and they are amazing. Cookies, brownies, cake, bread...all gluten, egg, dairy, and soy free, and they taste like the real thing!

  1. I don't know if you guys have Udi's baked goods out there in LaLa Land, but Udi's makes a super gluten-free small pizza crust that you can add your own toppings to. And, of course, if you spread it with pesto, you don't have to worry about dairy!

  4. I think you can still eat chick pea flour, right? Papadams are sooo good, if you're craving Indian. They're more like crackers than bread, but they hit the spot. I'll rack my brains for more!

  5. Oh you have my sympathy Skylar!! I love all those things too, and I try to avoid them, not because of allergies or sensitivities, but because of my family history of heart disease and diabetes...they just aren't good for me. Health food stores here often have a big selection of gluten free products.

  7. I am right there with you. I had to give up dairy a few years ago. Talk about a change in diet! If you like ice cream, try the coconut milk ice cream from So Delicious. It's a bit expensive so I watch for sales but YUM! If you like fancy coffee, Seattle's Best and Starbucks both offer soy milk in place of creamer.

    This past year I had to give up wheat and gluten. I have put potatoes back into my diet for starch. I have found a line of products by Schar that are pretty good. I buy them at Shoprite. Again, they are pretty expensive so I watch for sales. I've found that corn chips make great croutons. I can get a burger at McD's in a bowl. I just purchased a bag of King Arthur glueten free flour at my local Super G. I have been researching recipes but I haven't had the chance to try any.

    Just a little note, my son is severely allergic to all nuts so a lot of the glueten free products aren't safe for us. That is the main reason I don't have any specific recipes. Until recently I couldn't get flour without a nut warning on it.

    The biggest complaint I had was that I had to give up pizza. That took a couple of months to accept. Then I had to give up bagels and doughnuts. So sad but I can now have them in the house without being irked. Hang in there. You will find new ways to eat!

  9. I'm trying to move to a dairy free "lifestyle." It's hard. I don't have the problems with goat and sheep cheeses that I do with cow dairy. http://www.amazon.com/Dairy-Free-Allergies-Intolerance-Casein-Free/dp/0979128625/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1306307519&sr=1-1 is one of the cookbooks that I bought for helping me there. Still learning. Good luck to you. Personally I think that giving up wheat gluten is harder than giving up dairy.
