Guest Blogger JoAnn Ainsworth - Surviving Rejection

Rejection. Hard on the ego. A given for an author. A fact of life for everyone. Allow me to share some life experiences with you for surviving rejection.

Stay unhappy for only a short time.

Sounds impossible, doesn’t it, but it can be done. The trick is to focus on your mood instead of on the event.

My firm went out of business during the dot.com recession and I lost my job. When not focused on the job hunting, I spent the day listening to music, watching comedies, and meeting with friends who consistently cheered me up. I left only a little time to grieve—just enough to get it out of my system, but not so much that I got stuck in it.

I find that negativity dampens my energy level and eventually makes me sick. Depression blinds me to potential resolutions. By keeping my mind alert and my mood elevated, I have the energy to find my way out of the circumstances created by the rejection.

See if there is a lesson in the experience.

It seems to me that sometimes life causes bad things to happen to put us on a new path. Is life telling you that you’re in a rut, that it’s time to try something new? Maybe you should you be writing in a different genre.

In hindsight, those changes often are for the best–different friends, different job, different place to live, different hobbies.

Project onto family, friends and business associates who rejected you or your ideas those qualities you like most about them.

At the time you want to hate them, I’m telling you to do the opposite. I’m suggesting you focus on why you loved them in the first place or wanted to work with them.

What’s my reasoning? The goal is for you to become happy again as quickly as possible. Why wallow in the things that make you unhappy?

Visualize the relationship perfection you’re seeking. See family, friends and co-workers exhibiting the kinds of personality traits you love best. Often expectations are self-fulfilling prophecies. See the best in others and, maybe, that’s how they’ll respond.

Visualize the successful outcome you want.

When I stay focused on what I want to have happen and don’t let the problems of the moment throw me completely off track, I can find the energy to take baby steps away of the mess and toward the solution.

Here’s where you have to be patient—with yourself and with others.

Baby steps take patience. Often, we want to jump right to the solution. I’ve found an immediate solution rarely happens. Instead, I have to work my way out of a problem little by little.

Eventually, I get to a point where I can taste the end goal. Excitement sets in. I’m back to my old self and enjoying life.

Keep getting up when knocked down.

Life taught me there’s always another chance to succeed if you don’t give up. Get up, dust yourself off, get happy and set a new goal. Remember, Abraham Lincoln’s first two businesses went bankrupt. He ran for public office six times and lost. BUT on the seventh, he won the presidency of the United States.

What if he'd given up because of rejection?

Best to you and yours,

We're baaaaack!

THINGS OVERHEARD AT RT

Kinsey, PG, Erin, Meg and Kelly are back from RT! (Well, this is being written Saturday night, so as long as our planes don't crash, we're back). (Not that any of us are nervous flyers. Just sayin'.) We had a blast and met lots of great people and even brainstormed titles and covers and crazy parody story ideas (just wait!). Here are a few pics and some things overheard at RT for your entertainment. Some of them are out of context and may or may not be dirty. Some of them are totally in context and are definitely dirty!

Our NNN poster!

I love you but I don’t want to bruise my hand right now.
Put your finger here.
Tie it tighter.
Everyone has to do it once.
I don’t know where we’re supposed to put it.
You don’t have to stick it in anywhere. Just kiss it.
I have a flogger and I’m not afraid to use it.
I’ve got the vibrator and the lube.
We need medication but we’re not on it.
Do not play with them unless you know where Dawn is.
If you don’t pace yourself, Saturday night will be a waste.
I grow on people. Eventually.
I have a box.
All of us at this table have a box.

Kinsey & Kelly going to the Gangster Ball

I found one in my bra last night.
It was in the freezer because there was wax spilled on it.
You need to come to my room - I have something I need to give you. It has a prick on it.
Lorelei James gave Eliza Gale a cowboy cocksucker.
My pants are around my ankles and I`m too tired to notice.
He pays me to pimp him out.
Pull ‘em out, pull ‘em out and show everybody!

Erin and Viv Arend

Why is it coming out of his mouth?
I’m banging it.
I've been deflowered.
I don’t think I’m getting a happy ending.
Get down on your knees.
I got to grab Kelly’s ass, my trip is complete.
I have to unbutton my sweater more.

PG's newest tattoo - it's an N cubed, if you can't quite make it out

It’s so small we can’t twist it off.
Give it to me, I can twist off anything.
It’s too hard to pull it out.
If I can’t go to the bar I can’t write it off.
I have a tool.
Your thing is not popping up on my thing.
Where should I put it?
You owe me a goat.
You can feel my charger any time.
If you can’t tweet it, it’s not really happening.
It comes right off.
I’m pretty sure we can take him down.
You all are some high maintenance bitches.

Reader Kim's NNN pedicure

I can handle a man with a giant sword.
This American money confuses me.
“Where’s my husband?” “I don’t know but he just left my room.”
Everybody should be having hot dirty sex.
If it could have come out,  it shouldn’t go in.
I have to get the wine bottles out of the bath tub so I can take a shower.
I have a present for you between my legs.
She took a boy up to her room and taught him how to spank.
I just signed the stomach of a married man.
It’s not the sex you have to research, it’s all the other stuff.
And...
I love RT!

Home Alone Continues!

The party is still going strong and the girls at RT are having a blast. Miss you guys! Remember to leave a comment and be entered to win ebooks and goody bags. See Wednesday's post for more details.

More RT Q & A

What author would you be lining up to get an autograph from?

Juniper: Anne Rice.

Kate: All of the Naughties! Because then I'd be hanging with them instead of at home working the day job. /pityparty

Skylar: Jamie Craig! Though there are TONS of authors I'd love to meet!

Sydney: Since I've yet to attend RT, I think I'd be too star-stark by so many favorite authors in one place to manage to get any books autographed at all.

What shoes would you be dancing the night away in?

Juniper: It’s still winter here in Alaska, so I’d dress appropriately. If you can call it that.

Kate: Something blingy and eye-catching.

Skylar: The Roger Vivier rose stilettos.

Sydney: Boots. Is anyone really surprised? lol

What would be your hangover cure?

Juniper: The best hangover cure I know is sleep, but of course at RT that’s not an option. Last time I barely slept for four days. In Ireland they recommend burying yourself up to the neck in moist river sand. But Chicago has a lake, not a river. So I guess it’s back to the old standby.

Another Cowboy Cocksucker, anyone?

Kate: Uhm..... Eric Sheffer Stevens! :)

Skylar: More alcohol!

Sydney: Not drinking so much the night before so I don't have a hangover to begin with. :) But if that doesn't happen then lots of H20 before bed and OJ in the morning.

What about you guys? What are you wearing on your feet? What author would you kill to get an autographed book from? Any hangover tips for the girls at RT?

Home Alone Party!!

While Erin, Kelly, Kinsey, Meg and PG are partying it up in Chicago, the rest of us are kicking up are heels at home. Well maybe except Sydney who is spending the next three days packing and moving. So why not join our "If we were going to RT..." party. Every comment today, tomorrow and Friday goes into the pot to win an ebook from Sydney, Juniper, Kate and Skylar's backlist, plus our NNN peeps at RT will be collecting swag for one fantastic goody bag winner.

And now on to the party Q&A!

What would you be wearing to the awards celebration at RT if you were going?

Juniper: Since the Naughties are obsessed with wine, I’d pay tribute to my crew by wearing this lovely dress actually made from fermented wine. One can’t move in it, sadly (the cloth is made by layering the cellulose around the body and letting it shrink to one’s form), but that’s okay. I can still hoot and holler for Meg.

Kate: Something with a little bling - where else will I have the opportunity to wear couture?

Skylar: Something vintage-y and rockabilly.

Sydney: Definitely something sexy and fun.

If partying with NNN crew at RT, what drink would you be found sipping on at the bar?

Juniper: I still have fond memories of downing Cowboy Cocksuckers at last year’s RT. I had no idea what was in them, so I looked it up.

Cowboy Cocksucker
Drink Type: Shooter
Ingredients
3/4 oz. Butterscotch Schnapps (more Butterscotch Schnapps drinks)
3/4 oz. Irish Cream (more Irish Cream drinks)
1 splash(es) Goldschlager (more Goldschlager drinks)
Instructions
Blend in shot glass. Serve

Pretty simple! I couldn’t find a photo of one, however, so this pic will have to do.

Kate: A lemon drop.

Skylar: Sangria!

Sydney: I'm a complete sucker (not to be confused with Juniper's drink) for Margaritas. So you'd definitely catch me sampling different flavors in search of the best. It's a rough job but someone has to do it.

What song would be belting out at the joint NNN/Smutketeers Cover Model Karaoke?

Juniper: I’d channel Elvis Presley, with some strategic rewriting:

Well, since my Naughties left me
I found a new place to dwell.
It’s down at the end of lonely street
At Heartbreak Hotel.

Sob! Miss you guys!

Kate: On the Steps of the Palace, from Into The Woods. Because I love a good show tune.

Skylar: Mockingbird by Carol King and James Taylor

Sydney: What's Karaoke without a little, Don't Stop Believing by Journey?

Who would your sexy date be to the Highland Party?

Juniper: For the Scottish Highland party, I’d bring this handsome hunk of Irish manliness. Even though he’s not Scottish, I defy you to find anyone who wears a kilt better than Liam Neeson, circa 1995 (in Rob Roy.)

Kate: Eric Sheffer Stevens!

Skylar: Gerard Butler, no question!

Sydney: Hope you like to share, Skylar. :)

What would you be wearing, drinking, and singing at RT this year? Feel free to include links to pics. :) And stay tuned for a post tomorrow from our RT peeps and more "If you were going to RT..." Q&A on Friday!

Guest Blogger Nikki Duncan - Naughty Projections

Given that I’m guest blogging for the Nine Naughty Novelists, it seems only right that we talk about something a little…naughty. Specifically naughty nights.

We all have a wild side or naughty desires or a wicked fantasy, right? Some people have all of the above.

That’s part of the fun about writing romance. I get to be all kinds of people and have all sorts of dreams and desires. The better part is that when I know what each person wants I then get to watch them all play out on the page.

The hero of my newest release—ILLICIT INTUITIONS—is an empath with some unique abilities. These abilities had unconventional sparks flying between Dr. H and Ava. Some of those sparks caused trust issues. Others ignited internal doubts. Others still awakened sleeping secrets and an emotional connection as real as a touch.

Tell me, if you found yourself involved with a true empath, someone who could read your emotions as clearly as if they were your own, how do you think you would handle it? Would it bother you, or do you think the connection would make your relationship more powerful?
ILLICIT INTUITIONS releases Today from Samhain Publishing.

Love could be their greatest liability.

Ava Malia knows three things. She was once a kickass covert operative. She will eventually adjust to her new team, the FBI Specialized Crimes Unit. And the only way to finally be free of her professional past is to solve her first case and get her hands on a game-changing technology. The only problem? Success rides on her ability to swallow her distaste for the persona she must adopt in order to earn the trust of a mysterious scientist.

Dr. H escaped childhood captivity with three things. His sister. Complete control of his gift. And an engulfing distrust of anyone in the government. Adjusting to a life of freedom hasn’t been easy, but he’s found peace in solitude. The sexy woman auditing his empathic studies, though, has a way of getting under his skin that’s both arousing and disturbing. Plus, his psychic ability warns him of secrets so deeply buried in her psyche, they’d be better left alone.

Yet their instant attraction strips away all their protective barriers, down to the foundation of a new, fragile trust. And a vulnerability that, when an old enemy opens fire, could blast away any chance of a future.

Blurb

His music moves the world. Can his love move her heart?

Nick Blackthorne knows all about words of love. They’re the reason he’s the world’s biggest rock star. The irony? He turned his back on love a long time ago, lured away by the trappings of fame.

An invitation to a friend’s wedding is a stark reminder of how meaningless his life has become. When he enters that church, there’s only one woman he wants on his arm—the one he walked out on a lifetime ago. But first he has to find her, even if all she accepts from him is an apology.

Kindergarten teacher Lauren Robbins once had what every woman on the planet desires. Nick. Their passion was explosive, their romance the stuff of songs…and it took fifteen years to get over him. Then out of the blue Nick turns up at her door, and all those years denying her ache for him are shattered with a single, smoldering kiss.

But molten passion can’t hide the secret she’s kept for all these years. Because it’s not just her heart on the line anymore…and not just her life that’ll be rocked by the revelation.

Exclusive Snippet from Love’s Rhythm

Nick rose to his feet, slowly, until he stood directly before her, their thighs brushing, holding her stare the entire time. “You kissed me,” he repeated on a low murmur. “Just like this.”

He lowered his head and took her lips with his. They were soft, as he remembered them being. Soft and sweet and warm. He stroked the tip of his tongue over them, an exquisite tension spreading through his body as they parted. Her tongue touched his, hesitant, almost shy. It was enough. Enough to bring their past, their passion, their desire, rushing back to him. He groaned, low and unabashed, and plunged his tongue deeper into her mouth, his hands snaking around her waist to snare her shirt in two tight fistfuls. She whimpered in reply, the sound pushing him over the edge.

With another groan—this one far more aggressive—he yanked her to his body, taking utter possession of her mouth as his hands roamed her back. She fit to his frame with perfection, firm and soft and lush. Nothing had changed. Her body against his ignited a primitive need in him he’d never been able to vocalize, not in song or word, no matter how many times he’d tried. It sparked a want beyond the physical.

He raked his hands up her back and tangled his fingers in her spun-copper hair, shorter than it had been the last time he saw her but no less silken, no less intoxicating with its thick, unrestrained waves.
Lauren moaned, her hips pressing harder to his. White-hot awareness shot through him, a sizzling tension that made his pulse quicken and his balls throb. He plundered her mouth with desperate greed, drinking in her breath, her equally hungry need. This…this… Why had he walked away from this? Was he insane?

She moaned again, her hands sliding up his shirt, slipping beneath his collar. Her skin touched his and there was nothing hesitant about the contact. She splayed her fingers over his shoulders, up the back of his neck and into his hair, pulling him deeper into their kiss. Her tongue mated with his, fierce and demanding. A noise sounded to Nick’s left—distant and unimportant—like someone coughing. But he didn’t care. Lauren was kissing him. His Lauren. His goddess. She was kissing him and grinding her sex against him and holding him as if she never would let him go again.

Christ, she infused him with heat. With life. Why the fuck had he ever—

“Ahem!
