Guest Blogger Emma Jay - Wedding Movies

Even though I’m a romance writer, I don’t usually write wedding scenes. I guess by that point in the story all the conflict has been resolved and it’s not as much fun to write. But writing from a bridesmaid and groomsman point of view, that’s a different story, and that’s where I went with Two Step Temptation, a short story available now from Samhain Publishing.

Since I’ve been married 24 years and I’ve only been to one wedding in the past 15 years, I had to turn to the movies to jog my memory about weddings. Here are some of my favorite wedding movies.

The Wedding Date. Now. I cannot tell you why this story works for me when Pretty Woman doesn’t. I guess that’s a blog for another time. But the heroine who hires the escort to go to her sister’s wedding was just fun. I loved the close-proximity trope, and the way he was there for her when everything fell apart. I totally bought into the fantasy. Also, in Two Step, I have the wedding party spending the weekend of the wedding together, as they did in The Wedding Date.

Father of the Bride, with Steve Martin. This is not so much a romance as a comedy, but boy, does it touch my heart.

27 Dresses. I bought this movie after I saw it. I love the scene where Katherine Heigl is trying on all the dresses for James Marsden, and I love their drunken singing, and I even love how she pays back her sister’s selfishness. And the ending was perfect.

Four Weddings and a Funeral. I love the progression of the romance as Hugh Grant and Andie Macdowell encounter each other over and over. I love the crazy friends, and of course I cried at the funeral.

What are your favorite wedding movies?

My Best Friend's Wedding.

Love it for the quirky/offbeat stuff, the singing, and because it's not "typical." I am not huge on weddings, though I do put them in my books (have a wedding in upcoming June book), but they can be fun in movies, too. :)

I did like the singing in that movie but I'm not a particular fan of Julia's. It was a different take on weddings!

When I wrote Wedding Bell Blues, it was just after my older son's wedding, which was a pretty large-scale affair. I didn't have to plan it (thank the good lord), but I got a ringside seat on what went into it. I think your way of getting wedding info would be a little less stressful! Congrats on the release.

Welcome Emma Jay!
Good wedding movie choices! I also liked the Wedding Planner (*anything* with Matthew McConaughy!) and love the wedding scene in Sweet Home Alabama (Patrick Dempsey-- *sigh*)

Funny thing about Sweet Home Alabama, in my mind I've re-cast the role of Jake so that he's now played by Matthew McConaughy. It throws me each and every time I see it and--surprise, surprise--it's Josh Lucas instead.

I like Runaway Bride because it's fun to see all the different wedding themes. That was my favorite part of 27 dresses, too.

Meg, that does sound stressful. I'm NOT looking forward to my son's wedding! Yes, my way is easier. But I loved how you played on the stresses in WBB. That's my favorite in the series so far.

Erin, I have to watch Sweet Home Alabama again. I don't remember the wedding scene.

PG, how funny that you recast. I need to see Runaway Bride again. I'm not a big JR fan, but I like Richard Gere!

Ali, I have Wedding Singer! I can't believe I left that one off.

I guess I don't have a favourite wedding move, but I do seem to put weddings into my stories.

Thanks, Kelly and Skylar!

Wolf, the Steve Martin one? It's so sweet, and Martin Short is hilarious.

My favorite part of The Wedding Date is when he backs her up to the car and doesn't kiss her. Smoking hot!
